We report preliminary results on the local structure of the thermal and velocity boundary layers obtained in a novel large-scale facility for the investigation of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection, the "Barrel of Ilmenau". We use air in a cylindrical enclosure with a diameter of 7 meters and a varible height of up to 6.40 meters as the working fluid which is heated from below and cooled from above. Velocity measurements using Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) in combination with local temperature measurements provide information on the near-wall turbulence with higher spatial resolution than in previous experiments. We will discuss the implications of our results and highlight some topics that will be be investigated in future.
