"STRIKING FEATURES OF SWIRLING FLOWS"
There are examples in everyday life of swirl development without any
obvious forcing (swirl dynamo). Under certain conditions, diffused swirl
concentrates in a strong vortex like a tornado (collapse). Swirling jets,
e.g. above delta-wings of aircraft, can abruptly become helical or
multi-helix (axisymmetry breaking). A typical feature of swirling flows is
occurrence of a few stable states at the same values of control parameters
(multi-stability). These practically important effects, which seem
enigmatic at the first sight, can be modeled by conical similarity
solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. Such modeling permits detailed
parametric studies and even analytical solutions which make clear the
underlying mechanisms of the swirl dynamo, collapse, axisymmetry breaking,
and multi-stability. A new technique is developed that permits the
reduction of the linear stability problem to ordinary differential
equations (despite conical flows are strongly nonparallel). Our stability
studies reveal axisymmetric instability of swirl-free jets (totally hidden
in quasi-parallel approaches) and helical convective and absolute
instabilities of swirling jets. These results appear consistent with
observed breakdown in swirl-free jets as well as helical and multi-helix
vortex breakdown in swirling jets.

"Sand ripples in oscillatory flow. "
A surface water wave travelling over a flat sand bottom induces an
oscillatory flow near the bottom. This flow creates the so-called 'vortex
ripples' in the sand. These ripples are studied by oscillating a tray of sand
in still water, in both 1D and 2D geometries. The theoretical and
experimental approaches are that of pattern formation, in particular we are
interested in the fully develop ripples. We observe interesting instabilities
in the ripples pattern when either the amplitude or the frequencies of the
oscillation are changed abruptly. Due to the nature of these instabilities we
argue that the 'classical' approaches of pattern formation fails for these
patterns. Consequently, we have developed a conceptually simple model, which
predicts some of the observations both qualitatively and quantitatively.
