Coherent Structures (Dissipative Solitons) in Nonlinear Systems Containing Dispersion and Dissipation
Generalized Boussinesq-type nonlinear wave equations are considered
containing both linear dissipation and dispersion (GDDWE). They arise,
e.g., in modelling of viscoelastic beams, and free surface shallow layer
flows. The solutions of permanent type (solitary waves, coherent structures)
are the result of the balance between the energy production, energy dissipation,
dispersion, and nonlinearity. GDDWE under consideration are not integrable
and their solutions can be explored only numerically. To this end a difference
scheme is constructed which faithfully represents the balance between nonlinearity,
dispersion, and dissipation. The numerical results show that the dissipative
structures retain their shape (identity) upon head-on or take-over collisions.
For the dispersion-dominated case the solitary waves behave similarly to
solitons in conservative systems. For intrinsically dissipative systems
(negligible dispersion) the Newtonian inertial term plays a stabilizing
role in the interaction of dissipative structures enhancing their particle-like
behaviour.
