EARLY HISTORY (1990-1998)

In 1990 Stphane Zaleski started writing a 2D volume of fluid code
using ideas similar to those of C. W. Hirt and B. D. Nicholls \cite{Hirt81}.
However the code was written in a way completely independent
from the {\sc sola-vof} code.
Between 1991 and 1992 Ruben Scardovelli
and Gianluigi Zanetti extended the 2D code to 3D
and interfaced it with the {\sc Scian} visualization package.
The results of these efforts were published in \cite{lafaurie94}.

The present code has considerably evolved from the original {\sc Surfer}.
In 1994 Jie Li, working at CRS4 and UPMC,
extended the method to make the interface tracking second order, with
piecewise linear reconstruction of interfaces \cite{li95}.
In 1995 Jie Li modified the multigrid solver to improve it efficiency.
At various stages of the development of these tools the contributions of
Xavier Callimez, Gang Chen, Denis Gueyffier, Jean-Franois Estrade,
Fran\c cois-Xavier Keller, Bruno Lafaurie and Carlo Nardone were
very helpful.

RECENT WORK (1999-2004))

Recent contributors include, in addition to the collaborators cited
above, Christophe Josserand, Anthony Leboissetier, Kike Lopez-Pages,
Stephane Popinet, Ruben Scardovelli, Rocco Tomassini and others.

2004: Even more recently Thomas Boeck contributed the harmonic mean of
viscosity.
